Sadia Islam

Industrial Design graduate · Lalmatia, Dhaka

I am finishing Industrial Design at BUET. My final project is a water carrier for households that still fetch water — designed around a jute and recycled-plastic shell that a workshop in Keraniganj can actually make.

I want a first job somewhere that builds prototypes rather than renders them. I am better with my hands than with a mood board, and I would rather be told that a thing does not work early.

What I can do

Four things I can do

  • 01

    Product design

Concept to working prototype. Sketch, CAD, 3D print, and then the part where it breaks and I find out why.

  • 02

    Making

Timber, sheet metal, moulded foam and 3D print. I cut my own parts, which is why my drawings are buildable.

  • 03

    Materials

Jute, recycled plastic, cork and bamboo — what a Dhaka workshop can source without a six-week import.

  • 04

    User testing

Twelve households, four weeks, and the notebook that came back full of things I had got wrong.

What people say
  • She rebuilt the handle four times because twelve households told her it was wrong. Most students defend the first one.

    Supervisor, BUET
  • The only intern whose CAD we could send straight to the workshop.
